About Star Creek Ranch

Star Creek Ranch (SCR) is 1,200 acres in the beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains. It is a hidden ecological gem in the middle of five other working ranches, and is at the south east corner of the Coastal Redwood Range.  SCR is about two miles long and one mile wide, and is an important watershed in the region.   It comprises a rich and diverse ecosystem which is home to many native and endangered species of trees, plants and animals.

Owner and Rancher Pete Pulis  is dedicated to regenerative land management, resulting in continuous improvement of the various aspects of the land.  Areas of focus in holistic and integrative land management include: encouraging native biodiversity, investigating the impacts and benefits of managed grazing on the vulnerable local watershed, techniques of holistic managed grazing using a combination of goat and sheep, community outreach and education, while considering how choices made on the ranch today will have an impact on these aspects in the future.

Star Creek Ranch Contract Grazing Services

Star Creek Ranch (SCR) is also a contract grazing business founded by Pete Pulis in 1999, based on a holistic approach of using goats and sheep to achieve land management goals.  We believe in using intentional grazing as a tool in fire prevention, maintenance and restoration of ecologically diverse landscapes.
Our grazing business is based on a holistic approach of using goats and sheep to achieve land management goals.  We believe in using intentional grazing as a tool in fire prevention, maintenance and restoration of ecologically diverse landscapes.

Our business has emerged from a non-traditional grazing program at our home ranch of Star Creek Ranch. Star Creek Ranch is 1,200 acres of brush, grassland and forest in the southern area of Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties.  For the past 9 years, we have been using animals and mechanical equipment to clear brush and help re-establish native perennial grass populations on over 600 acres and twelve miles of Ranch roads.  Our main objectives at Star Creek Ranch have been to reduce brush cover (fire hazard), improve the vegetative community, and to encourage restoration of healthy and bio-diverse ecosystems.

We have been performing contract grazing for vegetation management and fuel load reduction since 2006.  Our team includes people with long-term animal management, enthusiastic land stewards as well as valued herders experienced in detailed vegetation management. SCR values close attention to detail, building meaningful relationships, and caring for out animals and the  lands we have the privilege to work on.
